University of Sunderland
History
- The University’s modern roots lie in Sunderland Technical College which opened in 1901.
- he University celebrated a centenary of teacher education in 2008, 150 years of art and design in 2010, 90 years of pharmacy in Sunderland in 2011, and in 2012 celebrated its 20th year as a university.
- Sunderland Polytechnic was established in 1969 and became the University of Sunderland in 1992.
Location and Transport
- he University has three campus developments, one in the city centre, a multi-million pound award-winning riverside development, and a third at Canary Wharf in London.
- The city has a Metro light rail link which provides easy affordable access to the wider North East region. All UK and EU students can enjoy free travel on Metro, bus, ferry and Northern Rail services in their Fresher year, or £500 discount on University of Sunderland accommodation, and discounted travel in all subsequent years of study. There is also free bus travel around the two Sunderland campuses and the Halls of Residence.

Entry Standards
- The University accepts nationally recognised advanced qualifications and gives equal consideration to academic and vocational qualifications.

- All official Government teaching quality assessments over the past seven years have awarded the University of Sunderland the highest possible ratings available.
- The university’s Teacher Training provision for Secondary Education has ‘A’ Grade recognition by OFSTED and is therefore among the best in the country.

Sport
- Students have access to CitySpace, the university’s £12-m sports and social space with first-class sporting and recreational facilities.
- Two major indoor sports centres, indoor tennis, full size grass and artificial pitches, athletics facilities, the region’s only 50m swimming pool, cycle networks, watersports, a marina on the seafront and a dry ski slope.
- University sporting clubs cater for everything from sailing to Gaelic football, and teams compete at inter-university BUSA events.
Recent/Prospective New Builds
- The award-winning Sir Tom Cowie riverside campus was voted one of the top five campuses in the UK. It has a Gateway one-stop-shop for easy access to student support and has recently invested in a MediaHUB.
- City Campus investment has included the £12-m CitySpace sports and social space, a multi-million pound refurbishment of the Murray Library, and the Gateway, offering multiple support services to students.
- The Phase 1 £7.5-m Sciences Complex opened in December 2011, with a new public square. the Quad, opened in February 2011. 2011 also saw the opening of the final phase of a new £12-m student village, located close to City Campus. The £9m Phase 2 Sciences Complex scheme will complete in 2015.
- 2012 saw £7m invested in the University’s largest on-campus teaching space, Priestman Building, which houses performance and fine arts subjects, and a new centre for photography on City Campus. 2013 saw further significant investment in teaching space and exhibition space at the University of Sunderland National Glass Centre.
- 2014 saw the refurbishment of the University’s London Campus on Canary Wharf.
- In 2015 a new £6m hotel will open close to campus and a £10.6m FabLab North East will open as part of the University’s city centre campus expansion and development, combining collaborative workspace, business incubator, community maker-space and learning zone.
Availability of Part-Time Work
- Students can access Student Jobs via the Careers and Employability Service. We encourage students to access these via the on-line vacancy system, Opportunities On-line. This system also allows access to graduate jobs, paid projects and volunteering.
- Placements as part of a programme of study are available via individual Faculties, all of which have dedicated Placement Officers.
