While the cost of private education has always been higher, education in government-run institutions has also increased sharply in the last one tow years with the HRD ministry taking the decision to hike under-graduate fees in Engineering by 80%.
The decision to hike fees for undergraduate IIT courses from average Rs 50,000 to Rs 90,000 annually was taken in June 2013 at the meeting of the IIT Council. In the case of IIT, the student fees include only 30% of the total operational cost of the institute and comes at a time when the premier tech institutes are working to become self-sufficient.
This has wider impact on fee structure of other educational institutions in technical and non-technical sector. Most of the Private Engineering colleges / universities have B.E or B.Tech fees in range Rs. 70,000 – 90,000 per year. For Diploma in Engineering in India, average fees is Rs. 50,000 per year. Other graduations like B.A, B.Com, B.Sc fee also got increased. Fees of non-technical programs at University is low but at college level operational cost gets added and average fees ranges goes up to Rs. 20,000 per year.
Total Fees = University Fees + College Operational Fees + Study Material Fees + Other Facilities Fees
Even after increased fees, Education in India is much economical compared to countries in Europe and USA.
